1. Measure the largest pet that will use it

Measure shoulder height, body width and the comfortable step-over height. The opening should let the animal pass without crouching sharply or scraping its sides. Use the product manufacturer's sizing chart rather than guessing from breed or weight alone.

2. Identify the door material and thickness

Photograph both faces and the edge of the existing door. Wood, insulated steel, fiberglass, hollow-core and storm-door assemblies need different installation approaches. Decorative panels, glass, internal bracing and hardware can make the proposed location unsuitable.

3. Look for cold-climate performance

Check the pet's inside and outside landing areas, step height, snow accumulation, drainage, nearby stairs, door swing and furniture clearance. A wall opening requires much more review because framing, wiring, plumbing, insulation, siding and moisture barriers may be hidden inside.
